What is stump removal?

After a tree is removed from your garden, you will be left with a tree stump that can be quite an eye sore. Stump removal is the process of removing a stump from your garden entirely, including the roots of the tree.

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding is done for the same reasons as stump removal. Only it is a much simpler process involving a complex machine called stump grinder. This machine shaves the stump till it is gone.

What is the difference between stump removal and stump grinding?

Stump removal includes removing a stump with its roots. This can be quite complex and requires specialist equipment, such as a Bobcat. Since all the roots (even the deeper ones) are being taken out, stump removal can even damage your garden.
Stump grinding on the other hand requires lighter equipment – a stump grinder. It does not involve complete root removal. Instead, the grinder is used to shave the stump to the ground. It’s quicker and doesn’t damage your garden.
Due to the difference in process, stump grinding is cheaper than stump removal. Whilst the former is more suitable for residential areas, stump removal is better suited for construction sites.

Does stump grinding remove the entire stump?

While it uses lighter equipment, stump grinding yields the same results as stump removal on the periphery. The stump is levelled to the ground. Most grinders go a bit deeper than ground level so some of the roots are also removed in the process. However, most of the root system remains in the ground as part of this process.

Why do I need stump removal?

Stumps can be unattractive in your garden, coming in the way of your beautiful landscaping. This is one of the primary reasons why people remove stumps.
Stumps can host pests and other unwanted guests. When these multiple, you will have an infestation on your hand that can be difficult to remove.
Another reason to remove stumps is because they can be a tripping hazard.

Will a stump decompose naturally if left alone?

Yes, the stump can rot away but this is likely to take years. Decomposition of a stump is dependent on a number of things, including its size, species, moisture levels, insect activity and structure of the stump.

Can I plant in the same place where a stump once was?

If the stump has been dug out and all of its root system has been removed, you can definitely replant. On the other hand, if the stump has been ground out, there may still be part of the root system underground. The decomposing stump remains can change the soil’s acidity, making it unwise to plant in that same spot. Our expert arborists can guide you when they remove the stump.

Why should I hire an expert to do this job?

Stump removal and stump grinding is more difficult than it looks. It is best left in the hands of experts who have the experience, knowledge and specialist tools to undertake this job safely and quickly. Most likely, getting a professional to remove the stump will also be more cost effective, as you will need to hire or buy specialist equipment, as well as seek help from another person when doing this job. There is also a cost to dispose of the debris. An arborist will take care of all this.
Finally, arborists are insured. Should you damage your or someone else’s property in the process of removing a stump, you may not have an insurance to cover you.

Do you remove the debris left after stump grinding?

Yes, removal of debris is offered as an optional service. We can also bring in topsoil, seed and straw – you just add water, and it will be lawn in no time.
