Treescape has developed several mobile GIS hybrid software systems for asset data collection and arboricultural workload management. These systems developed in conjunction with our IT consultants, are of particular value to owners of large tree populations, such as councils.
Treescape believes this is a fundamental step in providing arboricultural management solutions for the 21st Century.

TreeCapture
TreeCapture is an application designed to capture information about trees and associated maintenance activities by contractors working for councils and other large tree asset owners. The application has been built for hand-held computers such as Compaq IPAQ Pocket PCs, and is a customisation of the ESRI ArcPad GIS system. It is designed to support the identification and attribute capture of trees and maintenance activities by crews in the field, with little or no paperwork involved.
Data captured during the day is exported and automatically sent to the client via our main database.
TreeCapture is currently used by two of New Zealand’s largest councils - Auckland and Waitakere City.

TreePlant
TreePlant is a non-spatial GIS product that produces planting lists for our landscape crews, with exact locations and species to plant. TreePlant is an integrated Access database / iPAQ field application system : it allows our management team to schedule planting work from the office, then export the data to iPAQs for the field crews to action.
The field crews plant the trees and record the details on the iPAQ. Then they return to the office and upload the data, printing off weekly reports and invoices at the same time. TreePlant is used on our long-term tree planting and maintenance contract with Manukau City Council.

Custom GIS Asset Data Collection
Treescape had an urgent request to estimate the amount of tree maintenance work required in Karori Cemetery in Wellington. The city had been hit hard by the storms in 2004 and many of the older trees were too large and had become a hazard to both visitors and the graves themselves - yet no data existed on tree numbers or condition.
With the assistance of Wellington City Council, who provided aerial photos, our IT consultant quickly built an application that would allow one of our skilled arborists to visit each tree, capture its exact location, assess its condition and estimate the work needed.
From this collection of data we were able to produce a cost analysis and future works programme to allow the council to budget and plan for the future.

A History of Development
All our database systems are a hybrid of the tried-and-tested Treenote Utility Vegetation Management Software which is still used across the country to aid with programming and resource allocation on utility line clearance contracts. TreeCapture also took the best functions of our first asset data capture system, TreeTracker.
TreeCapture and its custom variations are easily linked to most mapping systems and other asset management programmes.
To maximise the use of the information we had in our basic databases we needed to look at ways to integrate it with our client’s asset mapping systems and analyse the collected data.
After looking at other off-the-shelf asset management programmes from around the world, we decided to work with our IT consultant to develop a system from scratch.
